Van Servicing in Canterbury for Tradespeople
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
Van servicing in Canterbury does not have to mean a day without your van. A mobile mechanic can service a small van at your yard, home or another safe spot, so you are not driving to a garage and waiting. Most small vans follow the same MOT rules as cars, but working vans often need servicing more often because of the miles and loads they carry.
Why servicing at your yard saves downtime
For a tradesperson, the van is the business. A garage visit usually means dropping it off, getting a lift, then collecting it later. That can cost you a morning or a whole day of work.
When we service a van where it is parked, you keep working nearby. You can unload what you need first, and the van stays where your tools and stock are. If it is parked at home, we can do the work while you are on another job, as long as we have access and the keys.
We need a safe, reasonably level spot with room to work around the van. If you are not sure whether your street or yard is suitable, our guide to parking for a mobile mechanic in Canterbury explains what works best.
How often should a working van be serviced?
Check your van’s handbook or service book first. Intervals vary between makes, models and engines, and many vans have a schedule by miles and by time.
As a general guide, the AA says manufacturers usually recommend a service every 12,000 miles, and that a car should be serviced at least once a year. The AA also suggests that if you drive a lot, roughly over 2,000 miles a month, you consider an interim service every 6 months. Many tradespeople easily reach that kind of mileage.
The AA explains that an interim service covers selected checks such as brakes, engine oil, tyre pressures and lights. A full service is more comprehensive and adds items such as air filter replacement. We offer both.

Van MOT class basics
A lot of tradespeople are unsure which MOT class their van falls into. GOV.UK sets it out by design gross weight (DGW), which is the maximum the van is designed to weigh when fully loaded.
- Class 4: goods vehicles up to 3,000kg DGW. This covers most small and medium vans. The maximum fee is £54.85, the same as a car.
- Class 7: petrol, diesel and hybrid goods vehicles over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg DGW. The maximum fee is £58.60.
GOV.UK says a car or van must have its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. That gives you room to book it around your work.
If you are not sure of your van’s design gross weight, check its documents or handbook before you book the MOT.
A pre-MOT check in Canterbury can catch simple faults before the test, so the van is less likely to be off the road waiting for repairs.
Common wear items on a small van
Working vans carry weight, stop and start a lot, and often idle on site. That puts extra wear on some parts. These are the items we look at and can replace:
- Brake pads and discs. Extra weight means the brakes work harder. The DVSA MOT inspection manual covers light commercial vehicles, and brakes are a major part of it. Read our guide to brake pad warning signs if yours are squealing or grinding.
- Engine oil and oil filter. Short trips between jobs and long idling are hard on oil. Change it at the interval in your service book.
- Air filter. Vans on building sites or dusty lanes can clog an air filter faster.
- Cabin (pollen) filter. A blocked one can mean a weak fan and misting windows.
- Fuel filter. Many small vans are diesel, and the fuel filter is a regular service item. Check your book for the interval.
- Timing belt and water pump. These are replaced at set intervals by miles or age. Skipping them is a risk you do not want on a working van. Our timing belt replacement guide explains why it matters.
If a warning light comes on, we can read the fault codes and find the cause.
When to stop driving
Do not keep working a van that has a brake problem, a red oil pressure light, a temperature gauge in the red, or a flashing engine light. Stop somewhere safe and get it checked. Driving on can turn a repair into a much bigger bill, or cause an accident.
For anything outside our listed services, such as a clutch, suspension or exhaust problem, we can come out and diagnose the cause, then tell you what it needs.

Frequently asked questions
Can you service my van at my yard or on a site?
Usually yes, if there is a safe, level space to work and permission to work there. Send us the location on WhatsApp and we will confirm.
Is my van Class 4 or Class 7 for the MOT?
GOV.UK says goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight are Class 4. Those over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg are Class 7.
Do vans need servicing more often than cars?
It depends on the van and how it is used. Check your service book. The AA suggests an interim service every 6 months for high-mileage drivers.
Can you service more than one van at a time?
Tell us how many vans you have and where they are parked. We will agree the work and price on WhatsApp first.
