Mobile Mechanic in Canterbury: Parking, Flats and the Law
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
Yes, a mobile mechanic can usually work on your car in Canterbury, but not on the public street. The law makes it an offence for a business to repair or service a vehicle on a road, with a narrow exception for breakdowns. So we agree a suitable off-road place with you first, such as a driveway, garage, or a private car park where the owner is happy for us to work.
This matters if you live in a terraced street, a flat or a shared student house with no driveway of your own.
What the law says about car repairs on the street
The rule is in section 4 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. It covers England and Wales.
It says a person commits an offence if they carry out “restricted works” on a motor vehicle on a road. Restricted works means repairing, maintaining, servicing, improving or dismantling a vehicle or its parts. It also covers fitting, replacing or renewing parts.
There is a defence for someone who proves the work was not done as a business or for payment. But that defence does not apply if the work gave reasonable cause for annoyance to people nearby. For a mobile mechanic, who is working as a business, the defence simply does not apply.
The penalty on conviction is a fine of up to level 4 on the standard scale, which is £2,500 under the Sentencing Act 2020. Section 6 of the Act also lets an authorised council officer issue a fixed penalty notice instead.
What counts as a “road”?
The Act uses the definition from the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. In England and Wales, a road means “any length of highway or of any other road to which the public has access”.
In practice, that means a normal residential street, including the parking bay outside your house, is a road. Your own private driveway or garage is not open to the public, so it is a much better place to work.
Car parks are less clear. Whether a particular car park counts as a road can be a legal question. To keep things simple and fair to everyone, we avoid doing work in public car parks.

The breakdown exception
The law does allow for genuine breakdowns. It is a defence to prove that the work was a repair arising from an accident or breakdown, where repairs on the spot or elsewhere on the road were necessary. The work must be carried out within 72 hours of the accident or breakdown, although the Act also lets the local council authorise it to be done later.
So if your car has broken down on the street, a repair on the spot to get it moving may be allowed. Planned work, like a service or new brake pads, is not a breakdown, and it should be done off the road.
Where we can work on your car
These are the places that usually work well:
- Your driveway or garage. The simplest option. It needs to be safe and fairly level.
- A friend’s or family member’s driveway. If you have no driveway, someone nearby might.
- Your workplace car park. Ask your employer first. Many are happy as long as we keep it tidy and out of the way.
- A private car park at your flats. These are usually owned or run by a landlord, freeholder or managing agent. Ask them for permission before we book, and check whether your lease or tenancy has rules about car repairs.
- Student accommodation car parks. The same applies. Ask the accommodation provider before booking.
If you are not sure your space is suitable, send us a photo on WhatsApp. We will tell you honestly whether it works. If there is nowhere suitable, a garage may be the better choice for that job.

Parking permits and waivers in Canterbury
Canterbury City Council offers a tradesperson waiver for tradespeople working in the district who need their vehicle for work. The council says it is virtual and that users must keep clear of bus stops and other designated spaces.
That waiver is about where a tradesperson’s vehicle can park. The council’s page does not say it allows repair work on the street, and it does not change section 4 of the 2005 Act. Your car still needs to be off the road for planned work.
If you live in a permit zone, it is worth checking the council’s parking permits page for your own permit rules.
How we can help
We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham. Our mobile mechanic service in Canterbury covers the city and nearby villages such as Sturry, Bridge, Littlebourne and Wingham.
We do servicing, oil and filter changes, air, cabin and fuel filters, brake pads and discs, cambelts, water pumps, pre-MOT checks and fault finding. We also work on classic and vintage cars.
Before we book, we agree where the work will be done, so there are no surprises on the day. Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job and its difficulty. Parts are extra, and the price is agreed on WhatsApp before any work starts. If your car will not start at all, our guide on what to do when your car won’t start may help first.
Frequently asked questions
Can you service my car on the street outside my house?
No. Section 4 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 restricts business repairs on a road. We agree an off-road place with you instead.
What if my car has broken down on the road?
The Act has a defence for necessary repairs arising from an accident or breakdown, done within 72 hours of it. Planned servicing does not count.
I live in a flat. Can you still help?
Often, yes. If your building has a private car park, ask the landlord or managing agent for permission first, then send us a photo of the space.
