Mobile Car Servicing at Home: How It Works
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
Mobile car servicing means the mechanic comes to your home or workplace and services your car there, instead of you taking it to a garage. You tell us the car and the service you need, we agree the price on WhatsApp, and on the day we bring the tools and parts to you. You carry on with your day while the work is done.
This guide explains what happens from first message to finished job, so you know what to expect.
How mobile car servicing works, step by step
1. You send a message. WhatsApp us your car’s make, model, year and engine size. Mention the mileage and when it was last serviced, if you know. A photo of the service book helps.
2. We agree the service and the price. We tell you which service makes sense and what parts it needs. Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job. Parts are extra. Nothing starts until you are happy with the price.
3. We book a time and place. We come to your home, driveway or workplace in Aylesham and the surrounding area.
4. The service is carried out. We change the oil and filters the service calls for and go through the checks. If we spot something that needs attention, we tell you before doing any extra work.
5. You get a summary. We explain what was done and anything to keep an eye on.
Interim or full service: which one do you need?
Most garages, including mobile mechanics, offer two levels of service.
Interim service: a smaller service between full ones. The RAC says it is usually done every 6 months or 6,000 miles. In the RAC’s version it includes an engine oil and filter change plus safety checks on brakes, lights, tyres, steering and suspension.
Full service: a bigger annual service. The RAC recommends it every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. On top of the interim items, the RAC’s full service adds an air filter replacement, a fuel filter check and a diagnostic check.
These are general guidelines, not rules for your car. Intervals vary a lot between makes and engines, and some modern cars have longer or variable service schedules. Always check your handbook or service book for what your car actually needs.

What we need from you on the day
Mobile servicing works best with a little preparation:
A safe, level place to work. A driveway, garage or private car park is ideal. If you are not sure your space is suitable, send us a photo first.
The keys and locking wheel nut key, if your car has one.
The service book or past invoices, so we can see what was done last time.
Your permission at work. If we are coming to your workplace car park, check that your employer is happy with it.
You do not need to stay with the car the whole time. We will call or message you if we find anything.
What a mobile mechanic can and cannot do at your home
Routine servicing is well suited to a driveway. That includes oil and filter changes, air filters, cabin (pollen) filters, fuel filters and brake checks. We also replace brake pads and discs at your home.
Some jobs genuinely need a workshop, for example a full engine rebuild. For classic engine rebuilds we use a workshop in Kent. Read more about our classic car engine rebuilds.
If your car has a warning light on or is running badly, we can do fault finding at the same visit. We will tell you what the cause is and what it needs before any repair goes ahead.
Is a mobile service as good as a garage service?
The quality of a service depends on what is done, not where it is done. What matters is the right oil for your engine, parts of the correct specification, and following the manufacturer’s schedule.
If your car is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, you may be wondering whether an independent service is allowed. We cover that in detail in does an independent service affect my car warranty.
A service is also not the same as an MOT. GOV.UK describes the MOT as a test that checks your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. A service is maintenance to keep the car running well. Many people book a service shortly before the MOT to catch problems early.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be at home while my car is serviced?
Not the whole time. We need access to the car and the keys, and a way to reach you if we find something that needs your decision.
Can you service my car at my workplace?
Yes, as long as there is a safe place to park and work and your employer is happy for us to be there.
How often should my car be serviced?
The RAC suggests a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, with an interim service around every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Your car’s handbook is the final word, as schedules vary by make and engine.
What if you find a problem during the service?
We stop and tell you what we found and what it would cost to fix. No extra work is done without your agreement.
