Interim vs Full Car Service: What Is Checked? | Kent
Updated 16 October 2026 · SYP Mechanic, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
A regular service keeps your car reliable and helps it hold its value. But what is actually checked, and what is the difference between an interim and a full service? Here is a clear checklist.
Interim service
An interim service is a lighter check, often recommended around every six months or halfway between full services for higher-mileage drivers. It typically includes:
- Engine oil and oil filter change
- Check and top up fluids: coolant, brake fluid, screen wash, power steering
- Check lights, wipers and horn
- Check tyres for tread depth, damage and pressure
- Visual check of brakes, suspension and exhaust
Full service
A full service is usually recommended every year or at the mileage in your service schedule. It includes everything in the interim service plus:
- Air filter replacement
- Cabin (pollen) filter replacement
- Fuel filter where due, especially on diesels
- More detailed brake check, including pads and discs
- Battery and charging check
- Drive belts and hoses checked for wear

Service due?
Send your reg number and we will tell you which service your car needs and what it costs.
Labour £30 to £50 per hour depending on the job. Send your reg number and we will reply with a price before any work starts.
Which service does my car need?
Your handbook or service book shows the schedule. As a rule of thumb, a full service once a year, and an interim service in between if you drive a lot of miles. If your timing belt is due, it is worth doing at the same visit. See when to replace a timing belt.
Can a car service be done at home?
Yes. Everything in the lists above can be done on your driveway in Aylesham, Canterbury, Dover or Deal. We use oil of the grade your manufacturer specifies.
Signs your car needs a service sooner
- A service or oil warning light
- Dark, low or gritty oil on the dipstick
- A musty smell or weak air from the vents, usually a blocked cabin filter
- Poor fuel economy or rough running
- Any new noise from the brakes, see brake warning signs
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an interim and full service?
An interim service covers oil, oil filter and basic safety checks. A full service adds air, cabin and fuel filters where due, plus more detailed checks of brakes, battery, belts and hoses.
How often should I service my car?
Most cars need a full service once a year or at the mileage in the service schedule, with an interim service in between for high-mileage drivers.
Can you service my car at my house?
Yes. We carry out interim and full services on driveways across Aylesham and East Kent, including Canterbury and Dover.
Does a service include an MOT?
No. A service and an MOT are different things. The MOT is a legal test done at an approved test centre. A service before the MOT can catch faults that would otherwise fail it.
