7 Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacing (and Discs) | Kent
Updated 16 October 2026 · SYP Mechanic, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
Brakes wear gradually, so the change is easy to miss. These are the signs we hear about most from drivers in Aylesham, Canterbury and Dover, and what each one usually means.
1. Squealing or squeaking when you brake
Many pads have a small metal wear indicator that squeals when the friction material is getting thin. A squeal that comes back every time you brake is a clear sign to get them checked.
2. Grinding or scraping
Grinding usually means the pad is worn down to its metal backing and is now cutting into the disc. At this point the discs normally need replacing too, so book a check straight away.
3. The brake warning light is on
Many cars have pad wear sensors that light a warning on the dashboard. Do not ignore it.
4. The car pulls to one side
Uneven pad wear or a sticking caliper can make the car pull left or right when braking.
5. A soft or spongy pedal
A pedal that sinks further than normal can point to worn pads, air in the system or a fluid problem. It needs checking before the car is driven far.
6. Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel
A pulsing pedal or shaking wheel under braking often means the discs are uneven or warped.
7. Thin pads you can see through the wheel
On many cars you can see the pad through the wheel spokes. If the friction material looks only a few millimetres thick, it is time.

Hearing one of these signs?
Send a quick WhatsApp with your reg number and what you are hearing. We will tell you if it is pads, discs or both.
Labour £30 to £50 per hour depending on the job. Send your reg number and we will reply with a price before any work starts.
When do brake discs need replacing too?
Discs have a minimum thickness set by the manufacturer. If they are below it, deeply scored, lipped at the edge or warped, they should be replaced, normally in pairs on the same axle and with new pads.
Can brakes be done at home?
Yes. Pads and discs are one of the most common driveway jobs in Aylesham and across East Kent. We need safe, level ground and your reg number to order the right parts.
Frequently asked questions
How long do brake pads last?
It depends on the car and how it is driven. Town driving with lots of stopping wears pads faster than motorway miles. Have them checked at every service.
Should brake pads and discs be changed together?
Not always, but if the discs are below minimum thickness, scored or warped they should be replaced with new pads at the same time.
Can you replace brake pads at my house?
Yes. We replace brake pads and discs on driveways across Aylesham, Canterbury, Dover and Deal.
Is it safe to drive with squeaking brakes?
A light squeak is a warning to book a check soon, not to ignore it. Grinding, a soft pedal, pulling hard to one side or a burning smell mean the car should not be driven until it has been checked.
Should brakes be checked at a service?
Yes. Pads and discs are inspected in every full service. See our interim vs full service checklist.
