When to Replace a Timing Belt (Cambelt) | Kent Mechanic

Quick answerReplace a timing belt at the mileage or age your manufacturer sets, whichever comes first. If there is no record it was changed on a used car, assume it is due. Warning signs such as ticking, misfires or oil on the belt are rare, so the interval matters more than symptoms. On many engines the water pump should be changed at the same time.

The timing belt, or cambelt, keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in step. It is out of sight, it rarely gives much warning, and on many engines a snapped belt means serious damage. Knowing when it is due is one of the best ways to avoid a big bill.

What does a timing belt do?

It links the crankshaft to the camshaft (or camshafts) so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment as the pistons move. On an "interference" engine the valves and pistons share space, so if the belt breaks they can collide, bending valves and damaging pistons.

When should it be replaced?

Every manufacturer sets its own interval, based on mileage and age, whichever comes first. Intervals vary widely from one engine to another, so check your handbook or ask us with your reg number and we will look it up. Two points catch people out:

  • Age counts even on low mileage. Rubber belts age with time, so a car that does few miles can still be due.
  • No record means assume it is due. If you have bought a used car with no proof the belt was changed, it is safest to replace it.

Warning signs of a worn timing belt

  • Ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
  • Difficulty starting, or the engine turning over but not firing
  • Misfires or rough running
  • Oil leaking near the belt cover, which can soak and weaken the belt

Often there are no signs at all, which is why the service interval matters so much.

Not sure if your cambelt is due?

Send your reg number and we will look up the interval for your engine.

Labour £30 to £50 per hour depending on the job. Send your reg number and we will reply with a price before any work starts.

What is included in a timing belt replacement?

A proper job replaces the belt with its tensioner and idler pulleys, as a kit. On many engines the water pump is driven by the same belt, so it is sensible to change it at the same time. Read why the water pump is done with the cambelt.

Can a timing belt be changed at home?

On many cars, yes. We carry out cambelt replacements on driveways around Aylesham, Canterbury and Dover. Some engines are better done in the workshop, and we will tell you which when you send your reg number.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a timing belt be changed?

It depends on the engine. Each manufacturer sets an interval by mileage and years, whichever comes first. Check your handbook or send us your reg number.

What happens if a timing belt snaps?

The engine stops. On interference engines the valves can hit the pistons, which can cause major damage and a very expensive repair.

Can the timing belt be done during a service?

Yes, and it saves a second visit. See what else is checked in our car service checklist.

Should the water pump be changed with the timing belt?

If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it is usually recommended, because it saves paying for the same labour twice later.
