6 Water Pump Failure Symptoms (and When to Replace It)

Quick answerThe most common signs of a failing water pump are coolant leaking at the front of the engine, a rising temperature gauge, steam from the bonnet and a whining noise. If the car is overheating, stop somewhere safe and switch off. On many engines the pump is driven by the timing belt, so both are usually replaced together.

The water pump pushes coolant around the engine to stop it overheating. When it fails, an engine can overheat in minutes. Here are the symptoms to look out for, and why so many are changed at the same time as the timing belt.

6 signs your water pump is failing

  1. Coolant leaking at the front of the engine or puddles under the car, often green, pink, orange or blue.
  2. Temperature gauge rising higher than normal, or an overheating warning.
  3. Steam from under the bonnet.
  4. Whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine, a sign of worn bearings.
  5. Coolant level dropping and needing regular top-ups.
  6. Crusty deposits around the pump from old, dried leaks.
If the car is overheating: stop somewhere safe and switch off. Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine. Book a check where the car is.

Why the water pump is often done with the timing belt

On many engines the timing belt drives the water pump. To reach one, you have to remove the other. Replacing both at the same visit means you only pay for that labour once, and an old pump cannot fail later and ruin the new belt. See our timing belt guide.

Can a water pump be replaced at home?

On many cars, yes. We replace water pumps on driveways across Aylesham, Canterbury, Dover and Deal, and refill and bleed the cooling system so no air is left in it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the first signs of water pump failure?

Coolant leaks at the front of the engine, a rising temperature gauge and a whining noise are the most common early signs.

Can I drive with a failing water pump?

It is not recommended. An engine can overheat quickly, which can damage the head gasket and cylinder head.

Is a water pump replaced at the same time as the timing belt?

On engines where the timing belt drives the pump, yes, usually. Both sit behind the same covers, so doing them together saves paying for the labour twice. Read when to replace a timing belt.
