Does an Independent Service Affect My Car Warranty?

No. In the UK, an independent service does not on its own affect your manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the maker’s service schedule and uses parts of the right quality. Competition rules mean a manufacturer cannot make you use a franchised dealer for routine servicing as a condition of the warranty. There are a few exceptions, mainly extended warranties and warranty repair work, which we explain below.

What the rules actually say

The protection comes from competition law. In the UK this is the Motor Vehicle Agreements Block Exemption Order 2023. It came into force on 1 June 2023 and runs until the end of 31 May 2029.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published guidance on how it applies to servicing and repairs. That guidance says a warranty made conditional on having repair and maintenance work done only within the dealer network can be a competition problem, where that work is not covered by the warranty itself.

The same goes for warranty terms that demand manufacturer-branded parts for routine replacements. The CMA also says warranty terms that clearly state your right to use an independent repairer are unlikely to raise concerns.

The AA puts it simply: you cannot be obliged to use a franchised dealer, including as a condition of warranty.

The conditions you need to meet

The rules protect your choice of garage. They do not mean anything goes. The AA and What Car? both say the independent service must:

  • follow the manufacturer’s service schedule for your car, and
  • use manufacturer-approved or genuine-quality parts.

Service schedules vary a lot between makes, models and engines. Check your handbook or service book for the right intervals and what each service should include. If you are not sure whether your car needs an interim or full service next, our car service checklist explains the difference.

The exceptions: where a dealer may still be needed

Extended warranties. What Car? notes that the Block Exemption does not cover extended warranties. Their terms can say the car must be serviced by a franchised dealer. Read the small print before you book anywhere.

Warranty repairs, recalls and free servicing. The CMA guidance says it is objectively justified for a manufacturer to require its own original parts for repairs carried out under warranty, free servicing and recall work. So if you want a fault fixed free under warranty, contact the manufacturer or a dealer for your make.

Faulty third-party parts. The CMA guidance also says a warranty provider can refuse a claim that is linked to the failure of a spare part supplied by a third party. This is why the quality of the parts used matters.

Records to keep after every service

If you ever make a warranty claim, the manufacturer may ask for proof the car was looked after. Good paperwork makes that easy:

  • an itemised invoice with the date and mileage
  • a list of the parts and fluids used, ideally with part numbers or specifications
  • a stamp or entry in the service book, or an update to the digital service record if your car uses one

Keep these together with your MOT certificates. They also help when you come to sell the car.

Should you use an independent or a dealer?

That is your choice, and it is a personal one. Some owners like the dealer for the first few years. Others want the convenience and lower labour cost of an independent, or a mechanic who comes to them.

What matters for your warranty is the work itself: the right schedule, the right parts and proper records. Whoever services your car should be happy to show you all three.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dealer refuse a warranty claim because I used an independent garage?
Not simply for that reason, if the service followed the schedule and used suitable parts. A claim can still be refused if the fault is linked to a faulty third-party part.

Does this apply to extended warranties?
Not always. Extended warranties are not covered by the Block Exemption, so their terms can require dealer servicing. Check your policy.

Do I need genuine manufacturer parts for a service?
The AA and What Car? say parts should be manufacturer-approved or genuine quality. For repairs done under warranty, the manufacturer can insist on its own parts.

Will my car still get recall work if I use an independent?
Yes. Recalls are separate from routine servicing. If you get a recall notice, follow the instructions in it.
