How to Choose a Mobile Mechanic in Kent: 7 Questions to Ask
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
The best way to choose a mobile mechanic in Kent is to ask a few plain questions before you book. Will they agree the price first? What parts will they fit? Can the job be done at your home, and will you get proper paperwork afterwards? A good mechanic will answer all of these happily.
This guide is honest about what to look for, including when a mobile mechanic is not the right choice.
1. Will you agree the price before you start?
This is the most important question. Ask how the price is worked out and get it agreed before any work begins.
Most mechanics charge labour plus parts. Ask what the labour rate is, roughly how long the job takes, and whether parts are included. A written message, such as a WhatsApp or text, gives you a clear record of what was agreed.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if no price is agreed beforehand, you only have to pay a reasonable price. Relying on that after the event is much harder than agreeing a figure up front, so get it settled first.
Also ask what happens if the mechanic finds something else. The answer you want is: “I will tell you and agree it with you before doing anything extra.”
2. What parts will you fit?
Parts vary in quality and price. Ask whether the mechanic is fitting parts that match the original specification for your car, and what brand they are. You are entitled to ask, and a good mechanic will not mind.
If your car is still under a manufacturer’s warranty, parts and servicing standards matter even more. We explain the rules in our guide on whether an independent service affects your warranty.

3. What can you do at my home, and what needs a workshop?
Many jobs are well suited to a driveway: servicing, oil and filter changes, brake pads and discs, and fault finding. Some jobs genuinely need a workshop, such as a full engine rebuild.
A trustworthy mobile mechanic will tell you straight if a job is not suitable to do at your house. Be wary of anyone who says yes to everything without asking about the car or the space.
Ask what they need from you too. Usually that is a safe, level place to work and permission if it is a workplace or private car park. Our guide to how mobile car servicing works covers the day itself in more detail.
There is one job no mobile mechanic can do at your home: the MOT test. GOV.UK says you must use an approved MOT test centre. A mobile mechanic can do a pre-MOT check so you go in prepared.
4. What do other customers say?
Look at the mechanic’s Google reviews and read a few in full, not just the star rating. Recent reviews tell you more than old ones. See how the business replies to any complaints, as that shows how they handle problems.
If a business has few reviews, that does not automatically mean it is bad. Ask questions and see how clearly they answer.
5. Will I get paperwork?
Ask what you will get when the job is finished. A useful record shows the date, the car’s mileage, the work done and the parts fitted.
Keep it with your service history. It helps if you have a warranty to protect, and it helps when you come to sell the car. A buyer will trust a car more with a clear history.
6. Do you actually cover my area?
Kent is a big county. A mechanic based on the other side of it may not be able to come out easily, or may charge for the travel. Ask where they are based and which towns and villages they cover.
7. What are my rights if something goes wrong?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says a trader must carry out a service with reasonable care and skill. Which? explains that if the work falls short, you can ask the trader to put it right at no extra cost. If that is not possible, you may be entitled to a price reduction.
You should not need to rely on this. But a mechanic who is open about putting things right is a good sign.
When a mobile mechanic is not the best choice
Being honest, a mobile mechanic is not always the answer. Jobs that need a ramp, heavy lifting equipment or several days of work may be better done in a garage. And if you have nowhere safe and legal to work on the car, a garage may be simpler.
The right mechanic will tell you this rather than take the job anyway.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mobile mechanic cheaper than a garage?
Not always. It depends on the mechanic’s rates and the job. Compare the labour rate and parts, and agree the total before work starts.
Can a mobile mechanic do an MOT?
No. GOV.UK says the MOT must be done at an approved test centre. A mobile mechanic can do a pre-MOT check beforehand.
What should I do before the mechanic arrives?
Make sure there is a safe, level place to work, and have the keys and any locking wheel nut key ready.
