Quick answerA proper classic engine rebuild means taking the engine out, marking the timing before anything moves, numbering every valve so it returns to its own seat, cleaning and inspecting each part, then reassembling with parts in their original places. The steps below show a real rebuild from our Kent workshop.

A classic engine rebuild is not a quick job, and it should not be. Here is a real rebuild from our workshop, photographed as it happened, to show what goes into doing it properly.

1. Engine out and on the bench

The engine comes out of the vehicle and goes onto a solid bench, with everything that comes off it bagged and kept together.

2. Mark everything before it moves

Before the timing gears come apart, their positions are marked in paint. It takes minutes and means the engine goes back together exactly in time.

3. Cylinder head off and valves numbered

Valves wear into their own seats. Each is numbered so it returns to exactly the same place, and the rocker gear is kept in order.

Why the details matter

Marking, numbering and inspecting take time, but they are what separate a rebuild that lasts from one that gives trouble. If you have a classic, vintage or older diesel engine that needs attention, send us the details through the booking form and choose "Classic car / steam restoration".

Frequently asked questions

Do you rebuild classic car engines in Kent?

Yes. Engine rebuilds are carried out in our workshop, with collection and delivery discussed when you book.

Why are the valves numbered during a rebuild?

Each valve wears into its own seat. Numbering them makes sure every valve goes back into the same place.

My classic has been stored for years. Does it need a rebuild?

Not always. Many laid-up engines only need careful recommissioning. See our recommissioning checklist before deciding.
