Recommissioning a Classic Car After Storage: Checklist
Updated 16 October 2026 · SYP Mechanic, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
A classic that has been sitting in a garage or barn for years can often be saved. The mistake is trying to start it straight away. Here is how we bring laid-up vehicles back to life safely.
Do not just turn the key
After long storage, oil drains off bearings and cylinder walls, fuel goes stale and seals dry out. Cranking it before it has been checked can damage the engine you are trying to save.
Our recommissioning checklist
- Fuel: drain old fuel, check the tank, lines and filters, and clean carburettors or injection parts.
- Oil: drain and replace oil and filter, then turn the engine by hand before any attempt to start.
- Cooling: check hoses, radiator and water pump, then refill with fresh coolant.
- Brakes: old fluid absorbs water and seals stick. Brakes are checked and refreshed before the vehicle moves.
- Electrics: battery, earths and wiring checked for corrosion and damage.
- Tyres: checked for age cracking, not just tread.

Bringing a laid-up classic back?
Send photos and how long it has been stored. We will tell you what it needs before it turns a wheel.
Labour £30 to £50 per hour depending on the job. Send your reg number and we will reply with a price before any work starts.
Steam engines
Traction engines, rollers and other steam vehicles need the same patient approach on a bigger scale: mechanical inspection, lubrication, and preparation for rallies and shows. Boiler inspection and certification must be done by a qualified boiler inspector, and we work around that requirement.
Keeping it original
Where possible we keep a vehicle as original as it can be, repairing rather than replacing and matching period details, like the lamps and spoked wheels on this vintage car.

See a full engine rebuild in our step-by-step rebuild post, or send us the details of your vehicle.
