Pre-MOT Check in Canterbury: Get Ready Before the Test

A pre MOT check in Canterbury means having a mechanic look over your car a week or two before the test, so obvious problems are found and fixed first. We come to your home or workplace, check the items the MOT looks at, and tell you what is likely to pass and what needs attention. We are not an MOT test centre, so we cannot issue a certificate, but we can help you arrive at the test centre with fewer surprises.

If you want the full step-by-step list of what to check yourself, read our general pre-MOT check guide. This post is about planning the check around your MOT date if you live or work in Canterbury.

When to book your MOT and your check

GOV.UK says you can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current one runs out and keep the same renewal date. That gives you a useful window.

A sensible plan looks like this:

  1. Find your expiry date on the GOV.UK MOT history service. It also shows what failed and any minor problems noted at past tests.
  2. Book your pre-MOT check early in that month-long window.
  3. Book the MOT itself for later in the window, leaving time for any parts to arrive.

If anything goes wrong on test day, you still have days left on your old certificate. We explain the window in more detail in how early you can MOT a car.

GOV.UK also runs a free MOT reminder service. It sends a text or email one month before a car’s MOT is due.

What a pre-MOT check covers

We work through the main areas listed in the GOV.UK guide to car parts checked at an MOT. These include:

  • Lights: condition and operation, including headlamp aim and the main beam warning light.
  • Tyres and wheels: condition, size and type, and tread depth. The Highway Code says car tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round.
  • Brakes: condition and performance. We look at pads, discs and fluid level.
  • Wipers, washers and windscreen: you need a clear view of the road.
  • Seatbelts, mirrors, horn and number plates.
  • Warning lights: the MOT checks lamps such as ABS, airbag and electronic power steering where fitted.
  • Exhaust and emissions: the exhaust must be secure, complete and not too noisy.

The GOV.UK guide also notes that the MOT does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. A pass does not mean the car is fully healthy, which is why servicing still matters.

Our list of common MOT failures goes through the faults that catch most drivers out.

Why check before the test, not after

If your car fails, GOV.UK says you can only drive it away if your current MOT is still valid and no dangerous problems were listed. Driving a car that failed for a dangerous problem can mean a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban and 3 penalty points.

Retests have rules too. If you take the car away and bring it back to the same centre by the end of the next working day, some items qualify for a free partial retest. These include lamps (apart from headlamp aim), wipers, tyres, mirrors and number plates. Other cases can mean a retest fee or a full test fee again. Finding problems beforehand avoids most of this.

If your MOT has already run out

GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. There are exceptions, including driving to a pre-arranged MOT test, or to or from somewhere to be repaired. If your MOT has expired, book the test first, then ask us to come to the car rather than driving it around.

How we help Canterbury drivers

We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham, and Canterbury is one of the main areas we cover. You can read more about our mobile mechanic service in Canterbury.

  • We come to your driveway, street or workplace, so you do not lose half a day at a garage.
  • Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job. Parts are extra.
  • The price is agreed on WhatsApp before we start.
  • If the check finds worn brake pads or discs, a service that is overdue, or a dirty air or cabin filter, we can usually sort that on the spot or on a return visit.
  • For anything outside our list of services, we will tell you what it needs so you can get it fixed before the test.
  • If a warning light is on, we can run fault finding to see why.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do my MOT?
No. We are not an MOT test centre. We do the checks and repairs beforehand, and you take the car to a test centre of your choice.

How long before my MOT should I get a pre-MOT check?
Early in the month before it expires works well. It leaves time to order parts and still MOT the car without losing your renewal date.

Will a pre-MOT check guarantee a pass?
No. The tester makes the final decision on the day. A check simply lowers the chance of failing on something simple.

What if my car has an advisory from last year?
Tell us. Advisories are often things that wear further over a year, so we check those first.
