MOT Due Date: How Early Can You Get Your MOT?
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
You can MOT a car up to a month minus a day before its current MOT runs out and still keep the same renewal date. So if your MOT expires on 15 May, the earliest you can test and keep that date is 16 April. You can test even earlier, but your renewal date will then move.
How early can you MOT a car and keep your renewal date?
GOV.UK sets out the rule clearly. You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out, and the new certificate keeps the same renewal date as before.
In practice, that gives you roughly a month to get the test done without losing any time on your certificate.
Testing in this window has real benefits:
- If the car fails, your old certificate is still valid. That means you can usually drive it away for repairs, as long as no “dangerous” defects were found.
- You have time to book repairs and a retest without a rush.
- You avoid the risk of the MOT running out before you get a slot.
What happens if you test earlier than that?
You are allowed to MOT a car earlier than a month before it expires. The catch is the renewal date.
If you test outside the window, your new MOT runs out one year minus a day from the date it passes. GOV.UK gives this example: if the car passes on 14 April, the new MOT expires on 13 April the following year.
So an early test is not wasted, but you lose the remaining time on your old certificate. That trade-off can still be worth it if you are selling the car or want a fresh certificate before a long trip.

When is your MOT due?
For most cars, the rules are:
- First MOT: by the third anniversary of the car’s registration.
- After that: every year, by the anniversary of its last MOT.
Some vehicles need their first test at one year old. GOV.UK’s MOT fees table shows which. Northern Ireland has different rules. Some historic vehicles do not need an MOT at all. See our guide to historic vehicle MOT exemption if you own a classic.
Not sure of your date? GOV.UK’s free MOT history service shows when the next MOT is due. You only need the number plate.
Don’t let it run out: reminders and penalties
GOV.UK runs a free MOT reminder service. For a car, it sends a text or email one month before your MOT is due, which lines up neatly with the earliest date you can test and keep your renewal date.
If the MOT does run out, the rules are strict:
- You cannot drive or park the car on the road. The only exceptions are driving to or from a repair, or to a pre-arranged MOT test.
- You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.
- You cannot renew your vehicle tax without a valid MOT.
How to prepare for an early MOT
Using that one-month window well is the best way to avoid a stressful fail. A few weeks before the test:
- Look up your last MOT on GOV.UK and note any advisories. Our guide to MOT advisories explains what they mean.
- Check lights, wipers, washers and the horn, as these are all checked in the MOT.
- Book a pre-MOT check so worn parts are found before the tester finds them.
If your car does fail, our guide on what to do after a failed MOT covers retests and driving rules.
How we can help
We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham. We come to your home or workplace in Canterbury, Dover, Deal, Sandwich, Folkestone and the villages in between.
We do not carry out MOT tests ourselves. What we do is get your car ready for one:
- Pre-MOT checks so you know what might fail.
- Brake pads, brake discs, filters, oil changes and servicing.
- Fault finding on warning lights or anything else we spot, so we can tell you what it needs.
Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job, with parts extra. We agree the price on WhatsApp before any work starts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I MOT my car 2 months early?
Yes, but your renewal date will change. Your new MOT will run out one year minus a day from the pass date, so you lose the time left on the old one.
If I MOT early and it fails, can I still drive?
Usually yes, as long as your current MOT is still valid and no dangerous defects were found. The car must still be roadworthy.
Does an early MOT give me 13 months?
It can give you just under 13 months. Testing up to a month minus a day before expiry keeps your existing renewal date, so the new certificate runs on from it.
How do I find my MOT due date?
Use GOV.UK’s free MOT history service with your number plate. It shows when the next MOT is due.
