Car Service in Deal and Walmer: Servicing at Your Door
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
You can get a car service in Deal or Walmer without driving to a garage: a mobile mechanic can do it on your driveway or outside your workplace. For coastal drivers, two things are worth watching at every service: salt exposure underneath the car, and wear from lots of short local trips. Most cars need a service roughly once a year, but check your handbook for your car’s exact schedule.
How often should you service your car?
The RAC recommends a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. It says an interim service is usually every six months or 6,000 miles.
That is a general guide. Your car’s maker sets its own intervals, and some cars use a variable schedule based on how they are driven. Your handbook or service book is the final word.
A service is not the same as an MOT. The MOT is a yearly legal test once a car is three years old, according to GOV.UK. A service is maintenance that keeps the car healthy between tests.
What a service covers
According to the RAC, an interim service includes an engine oil and filter change, plus checks on the battery, cooling system, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, exhaust, wipers, horn and seatbelts.
A full service adds an air filter replacement, a fuel filter check, a power steering fluid top-up, a charging system check and a full engine management diagnostic check.
Our car service checklist goes through each item in more detail.

Living by the sea: salt and your car
Deal and Walmer sit right on the coast. Footman James notes that a car kept close to the sea is more exposed to the elements. In winter, road salt adds to the problem.
Footman James explains that salt speeds up rust, and that it can attack the underside, chassis and suspension parts. Wheel arches take the brunt of salty water.
What this means at a service:
- The underside, brake pipes and arches deserve a proper look, not a glance.
- Washing the underside after salty winter roads helps. Footman James suggests jet washing underneath whenever you can.
- Cavity wax and underbody protection products can help keep rust at bay.
Rust on brake pipes or structural parts is a safety issue and can fail an MOT. Our guide to rust checks for cars in coastal Kent explains what to look for and what the MOT rules say.
Short trips: the hidden wear
Town driving often means short hops to the shops, school or station. These are harder on a car than they look.
The RAC says short journeys and stop-start driving may not give the alternator enough time to recharge the battery. It advises taking a longer drive about once a fortnight if most of your trips are short.
Diesel owners should also know about the diesel particulate filter (DPF). The AA lists frequent short journeys, where the engine does not get hot, as a cause of failed DPF cleaning. If the DPF warning light comes on, the AA says it can often be cleared by driving for around 10 minutes at over 40mph.
If your car mostly does short runs, tell your mechanic. Check your handbook for any guidance on cars used mainly for short trips.
Checks to do yourself between services
The Highway Code advises checking fluid levels at least weekly and tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Cars must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
If the car pulls to one side when braking, the Highway Code says to get it checked straight away. Do not wait for the next service.
MOT timing
You can have an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date, GOV.UK says. Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000.
Many people book a service shortly before the MOT. That way small faults are found and fixed first.
How we can help
We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham, and our mobile mechanic service in Deal and Walmer brings interim and full servicing to your home or workplace. We also cover Dover, Sandwich, Canterbury and the villages in between.
On a service we change the engine oil and oil filter, air filters, cabin filters and fuel filters as needed. We also check the brakes and can replace pads and discs. If a warning light is on, we can find the fault.

Frequently asked questions
Can a car be serviced on the street?
Usually yes, as long as there is safe, legal space to work. A driveway is easiest.
Will an independent service affect my warranty?
Using the right parts and following the maker’s schedule is what matters. Our post on servicing and your warranty explains more.
Does sea air mean I need more frequent servicing?
Not necessarily more services, but regular underside checks are worth it near the coast.
Is a service the same as an MOT?
No. The MOT is a legal safety test. A service is maintenance to keep the car running well.
