VW Mechanic in Kent: Classic and Modern VWs at Home
Looking for a VW mechanic in Kent who will come to you? SYP Mechanic is a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham, run by Petro Olekhnovych. He works on Volkswagens at your home or workplace, from air-cooled Beetles and campers to everyday Golfs and Polos. This guide explains what he can do on a VW, how a home visit works and what it costs.
A mobile VW mechanic for classic and modern cars
Most VW owners fall into one of two groups. Some run a classic air-cooled car, such as a Beetle, a Type 2 camper or a Karmann Ghia. Others need a reliable mechanic for a modern VW used every day. Petro looks after both, and he brings the tools to your driveway so the car does not have to go anywhere.
Being mobile helps classic owners in particular. A car that has been laid up, or one that is not running well, does not need to be driven or trailered to a workshop. Find out more about the mobile mechanic service in Aylesham and how it works.
Classic air-cooled VW servicing and repairs
Air-cooled VWs are simple, but they need regular attention. Petro can help with:
Servicing: oil change, valve clearances, points or electronic ignition, timing and carburettor checks.
Twin carb balancing on cars that have them.
Brakes, including pads, discs and fluid.
Engine repair and restoration work on older engines.
Our guide to air-cooled VW servicing explains why these engines need servicing more often than modern cars. If yours is losing power, using oil or getting noisy, read about the signs an air-cooled VW engine rebuild is due.
Owners of the original Beetle can also read our guide to VW Beetle common problems and maintenance.

Modern VW servicing, brakes and timing belts
For modern Volkswagens, Petro covers the routine work that keeps a car reliable:
Interim and full servicing, including engine oil and filter, air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter.
Brake pads and discs.
Timing belt and water pump replacement on engines that use a belt.
Warning light diagnosis.
Pre-MOT checks.
Not every VW engine has a timing belt, and the interval varies by engine. Your service book or handbook will show it. Our guide to timing belt replacement explains why it matters and what happens if a belt fails.
Always use the oil specification listed in your handbook. Many modern VWs need oil that meets a specific VW standard, so the grade alone is not enough.
Signs your VW needs a mechanic
Some problems can wait for the next service. Others need a check soon. Book a visit if you notice any of these:
A warning light on the dashboard: amber lights need checking soon. Red lights, such as oil pressure or engine temperature, mean stop as soon as it is safe.
Squealing or grinding brakes: worn pads can damage the discs, and grinding can mean metal on metal.
A timing belt that is due or overdue: if the belt snaps on many engines, the damage can be serious and expensive.
Oil leaks or oil smoke: common on older air-cooled engines, and worth keeping an eye on before they get worse.
Hard starting or rough running: on a classic this is often ignition or fuel, on a modern car it may show as a fault code.
A service that is overdue: old oil and blocked filters wear an engine faster, whatever its age.
If you are not sure whether a noise or a light is serious, describe it in your WhatsApp message when you ask for a quote. If in doubt, do not drive the car until it has been checked.
Before an MOT, a pre-MOT check can pick up worn brakes, blown bulbs and other simple faults so they can be fixed first. That can help you avoid a failed test and a retest.
