Oil Change in Canterbury: Oil and Filter Done at Home
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
An oil change in Canterbury does not mean a trip to a garage. We come to your home or workplace, drain the old engine oil, fit a new oil filter and refill with oil that meets your car maker’s specification. Labour is £30-£50 per hour, agreed on WhatsApp before we start, and parts are extra.
Oil change or service: what is the difference?
An oil and filter change does one job. The old oil comes out, a new filter goes on, and the engine is refilled with the correct grade.
A service is broader. As well as the oil and filter, a service includes checks that can spot safety problems with things like brakes, suspension and tyres before they get worse. Depending on the level of service, filters such as the air filter or cabin filter may also be changed.
So which do you need?
- Oil and filter change: useful between services, for example if you cover high mileage or your car’s schedule calls for more frequent oil changes than full services.
- Interim or full service: better if your car is due a service in its handbook or service book, or if it has not been looked at in a while.
Our car service checklist explains what goes into each level of service. If you are not sure which one your car is due, send us the make, model and mileage and we will tell you.
Why the right oil matters
Not all engine oil is the same. There are three things to match, and all three are in your handbook.
Viscosity. This is the grade printed on the bottle, such as 5W-30 or 0W-20. The first number, with the W, describes how well the oil flows when cold. The second describes how thick it is at running temperature. The wrong grade can mean poorer lubrication or higher fuel use.
Specification. Independent bodies set standards that an oil must pass. In Europe these are ACEA codes. For example, ACEA “C” oils are made to work with particulate filters and other exhaust after-treatment. Using an oil without the right specification can harm that equipment.
Manufacturer approval. Many carmakers have their own approvals on top, such as VW 508 00 or BMW Longlife-04. An approval means the carmaker has tested the oil and confirmed it suits its engines. Some engines need a specific approval.
Newer oil standards are not always backward compatible. An oil made for the latest engines may not be right for an older one, even from the same brand. “It’s a good oil” is not enough. It has to be the right oil.

How often should the oil be changed?
There is no single answer. It depends on the engine, the oil it was designed for and how the car is used. Some cars follow a fixed schedule, others a variable one set by the car itself.
Check your handbook or service book for your car’s interval. We cover the factors in more detail in how often should you change your engine oil.
One thing is the same for every car: if the red oil pressure warning light comes on while driving, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine. Do not keep driving. That light can mean the engine is not getting enough oil, and serious damage can follow quickly.
Getting rid of old engine oil in Kent
If you change your own oil, the old oil needs to go somewhere safe.
Never pour it down a drain. Pouring oil down the drain causes pollution, and it is an offence.
In Kent, household engine oil can go to any household waste recycling centre. It is free, but you need to book a slot before you visit. Kent County Council recommends taking no more than 5 litres at a time, because of the capacity of the oil container at the sites.
Put the old oil in a sealed container for the journey, and pour it into the engine oil container at the site. Waste oil from a business is different and has to go through the hazardous waste route instead.
What affects the cost of an oil change
We do not quote a fixed price without knowing the car. What changes the cost is:
- How much oil the engine holds. Engines vary a lot in capacity.
- The oil it needs. Oils with specific manufacturer approvals can cost more than general ones.
- The filter. Some are simple spin-on filters, others are cartridge types in a housing.
- Access. Some cars need an undertray removed before the drain plug and filter can be reached.
Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job. We agree the price on WhatsApp before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions
Is an oil change the same as a service?
No. An oil change replaces the oil and filter. A service includes the oil and filter plus a wider set of checks, which can catch problems with brakes, tyres and suspension.
Can I use any 5W-30 oil?
Not always. The grade is only one part. The oil also needs the specification, and sometimes the manufacturer approval, listed in your handbook.
Should the oil filter be changed every time?
We fit a new filter with every oil and filter change, as the name suggests. Check your service book if you are unsure what your car’s schedule asks for.
Where can I take old engine oil in Canterbury?
To a Kent household waste recycling centre. It is free, but you need to book, and no more than 5 litres per visit is recommended.
