If you need a classic car mechanic in Canterbury, we can come to you. We service and repair classic and vintage cars at your home or garage, recommission cars that have been laid up, and rebuild classic engines in a Kent workshop. Labour is £30-£50 per hour, agreed on WhatsApp before we start.

Why a mobile classic mechanic makes sense

Many classic owners would rather not drive a car that has not been serviced, or that has been standing all winter. Moving a car that will not start can mean a trailer or a tow.

A mobile mechanic avoids that. We bring the tools to the car, whether it lives in a garage, a barn or on a driveway. It also means you can see the work being done and ask questions as we go.

Our mobile mechanic service in Canterbury covers modern cars too. This page is for owners of older cars that need a different approach.

Classic servicing at your home

Older cars often need more hands-on attention than modern ones. A classic service is usually built around the car’s original handbook or workshop manual. That can include jobs a modern car never needs, such as setting points, timing and carburettor mixture, or greasing suspension and steering joints.

The right fluids matter. The FBHVC recommends traditional IAT antifreeze for historic vehicles and warns that OAT coolant can damage seals and gaskets in older engines. Fuel is another point. GOV.UK says classic and older vehicles may not be compatible with E10 petrol, and owners of cars not on the official checker should keep using E5.

GOV.UK adds that some rural or very small filling stations may sell only one of the two grades. If you use village stations outside the city, it is worth checking what is on the pump before filling a classic.

There is more on what a classic service covers in our guide to classic car servicing across Kent.

Recommissioning a laid-up car

A car that has stood for months or years should not just be jump-started and driven. Parts deteriorate when a car stands. Recommissioning means checking and bringing each system back into use in a careful order before the car goes back on the road.

We do this on site. Our post on recommissioning classic cars and steam engines explains the process in more detail.

Engine rebuilds in a Kent workshop

Some jobs cannot be done on a driveway. A full engine rebuild needs a clean workshop, time and the right equipment. We carry out classic engine rebuilds in a Kent workshop, so the engine comes out and goes back in once the work is done.

If your engine is smoking, knocking or losing compression, read our guide to classic car engine rebuilds in Kent to see what is involved.

We also work on air-cooled VW engines and do mechanical repair on steam engines.

MOT, tax and the law for classic owners

GOV.UK says vehicles built or first registered more than 40 years ago do not need an MOT, as long as they have not had substantial changes. Changing the chassis, body, axles or engine in a way that alters how the vehicle works can count.

Vehicle tax is a separate question. GOV.UK says vehicles built before 1 January 1986 can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2026, but you must apply for the historic tax class.

Being MOT exempt does not mean being exempt from the law. GOV.UK says you must still keep the vehicle roadworthy. Using a vehicle in a dangerous condition can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points. A regular check from a mechanic is the sensible way to stay on the right side of that.

Winter care around Canterbury

Kent County Council says its gritting focuses on primary routes most likely to ice over. So if you use your classic in winter, expect salt on the main roads and wash the underside afterwards. Some owners prefer to lay their cars up until spring instead.

If you store your car over winter, a little preparation saves trouble in spring. Plan to have it checked over properly before the first drive of the year.

How we can help

We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham and cover Canterbury. We also cover Sturry, Littlebourne, Bridge, Wingham, Ash and the villages around them. We come to your home or workplace.

For classics, we offer servicing and repair, recommissioning, air-cooled VW engines and fault finding. Engine rebuilds are done in a Kent workshop. Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job and its difficulty. Parts are extra, and we agree the price on WhatsApp before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you service my classic car at my house?
Yes. Most servicing and repair can be done where the car is kept. Engine rebuilds are done in a Kent workshop.

Do I still need my classic checked if it is MOT exempt?
Yes. GOV.UK says you must keep it roadworthy, and the penalties for driving a dangerous vehicle still apply.

Do you work on cars that have not run for years?
Yes. That is what recommissioning is for. We check each system before the engine is run.

What does it cost?
Labour is £30-£50 per hour plus parts. Every older car is different, so we agree the price on WhatsApp first.
