Cabin Pollen Filter: Signs It Needs Changing

Your car probably needs a cabin filter replacement if the air from the vents feels weak even on a high fan setting, smells musty or stale, or the windows take longer to clear. Filter makers such as Bosch suggest changing it about once a year, but the right interval varies by car, so check your handbook or service book. On many cars it is a quick job, and it makes a real difference to comfort and visibility.

What the cabin filter does

The cabin filter, also called the pollen filter, cleans the air before it comes through your vents. It traps dust, grit, pollen and soot. It is a different part from the engine air filter, which cleans the air going into the engine. We cover that one in our guide to engine air filter replacement.

Some cabin filters also contain activated carbon. This layer helps absorb odours and traffic fumes, which can be worth it if you drive a lot in town.

On most cars the filter sits behind the glovebox or under the base of the windscreen, near the wipers. Your handbook will show where yours is.

Signs your cabin filter needs changing

The signs build up slowly, so they are easy to miss.

  • Weak airflow from the vents. The fan sounds busy but not much air comes out. This is the most common sign of a clogged filter.
  • A musty or stale smell. Trapped dirt and moisture can let bacteria grow, which you smell when the fan is on.
  • Windows misting up more, or clearing slowly. Less air through the system means weaker demisting.
  • Hay fever symptoms in the car. If you sneeze more inside the car than outside, the filter may no longer be doing its job.
  • Leaves or debris in the vents or filter housing. A badly blocked filter can make the fan work harder.

How often should you change it?

There is no single answer. Bosch recommends once a year or every 15,000 km (about 9,300 miles). Haynes says manufacturers generally recommend every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or about once a year. Green Flag says one to two years, or roughly 12,000 to 20,000 miles.

Your handbook or service schedule is the final word for your car. Change it sooner if you:

  • drive mostly in town or heavy traffic
  • use dusty or country lanes a lot
  • suffer from hay fever or allergies
  • notice any of the signs above

Green Flag also points out that a cabin filter is not always changed at every service. Check your service paperwork to see when it was last done. Our car service checklist explains what an interim and full service usually include.

Is it safe to drive with a clogged cabin filter?

A dirty cabin filter will not damage the engine. The real risk is visibility. A clogged filter cuts airflow, so the windscreen can mist up faster and take longer to clear.

The Highway Code says you must be able to see before you set off. It also tells drivers to make sure the windows are thoroughly demisted. If your windscreen will not clear, do not drive until it does, and get the cause checked.

A blocked filter can also make the fan work harder and lets damp build up. The Motrio garage network notes this encourages mould on the air con evaporator. Changing the filter on time helps avoid that.

What affects the cost

Carbon filters cost a little more than standard ones. Labour depends on where the filter sits. Haynes says the job takes from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the car. On others, trim or panels under the windscreen have to come off first. If it is done during a service, there is little or no extra labour.

How we can help

Cabin and pollen filter changes are one of the services we do. We can replace it as part of a mobile car service, or on its own if that is all you need.

Labour is £30-£50 per hour, depending on the job and its difficulty. We agree the price with you on WhatsApp before any work starts. Parts are extra.

If your windows still mist up or there is a bad smell after a new filter, we can carry out fault finding to look for the cause.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cabin filter the same as the air filter?
No. The cabin filter cleans the air you breathe inside the car. The engine air filter cleans the air going into the engine. Both need changing at intervals.

Can I change a cabin filter myself?
On many cars, yes. It often just unclips from behind the glovebox. Fit it with any arrow pointing the right way, as shown on the filter.

Is a carbon cabin filter worth it?
It can be if you drive in heavy traffic or are bothered by fumes and smells. It costs a little more than a standard filter.

Why does my car still smell musty after a new filter?
Bacteria may still be in the air con system. If the smell stays, get it looked at.
