Car Maintenance for Students in Canterbury
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
Student car maintenance in Canterbury comes down to three things: keep the paperwork legal, do a few free checks yourself, and do not let the car sit for weeks without a look. A car needs a valid MOT, tax and insurance to be used on the road. Catching small problems early is the cheapest way to run a car on a student budget.
The legal basics: MOT, tax and insurance
These are the rules that catch students out most, often because a parent used to handle them.
MOT. GOV.UK says a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration. After that, an MOT lasts one year. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.
You can get the test done up to a month minus a day before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. GOV.UK also allows you to drive to a pre-booked MOT test without a valid certificate.
Tax. GOV.UK says you must tax your vehicle even if it is exempt and there is nothing to pay. To tax it you need a DVLA reminder letter, the V5C log book in your name, or the green new keeper slip if you have just bought it.
Insurance. Third-party cover is the legal minimum. GOV.UK says it covers damage or injury you cause to others, but not repairs to your own car. Driving without insurance can mean a £300 fixed penalty and 6 points, or an unlimited fine and a ban if it goes to court. The police can also seize the car.
If you move to Canterbury for term, tell your insurer your new address and where the car is kept. Check your policy wording on this.
If you will not use the car for a while
Some students bring a car down and hardly use it. Others leave one at home all term.
If a car is kept off the road, for example in a garage, you can register it as off the road with a SORN. GOV.UK says you cannot use it on the road until you tax it again, and you may get a refund for full months of unused tax. It also says you do not need to insure a vehicle that is kept off the road.
If the car is not declared off the road, it must be insured. GOV.UK says the registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle can get a £100 fine, and the car can be clamped, impounded or destroyed.

Free checks you can do yourself
You do not need tools for these. Do them once a month, and before any long drive home.
- Engine oil. Park on level ground with the engine cold. Pull the dipstick, wipe it, push it back and check the level is between the marks. Your handbook shows where it is and which oil to use.
- Coolant. Check the level in the expansion tank against the min and max marks, only when the engine is cold. Never open it hot.
- Tyres. Look for cuts, bulges and worn tread. Check the pressures at a petrol station. The correct pressures are in your handbook or on a sticker, often inside the driver’s door.
- Lights. Ask a friend to walk round while you switch on each light, including brake lights and indicators.
- Screenwash and wipers. Top up the washer bottle and replace smeared or split wiper blades.
- Warning lights. If one comes on, do not ignore it. A red oil, temperature or brake warning means stop safely and switch off.
These checks catch a lot of the faults that turn into bigger bills later. They also help you spot problems before an MOT. Our pre-MOT check guide for Canterbury goes into more detail.
Cars parked for weeks: what to look out for
Student cars often sit still through exam season or the holidays. A car that is not driven can develop its own problems.
When you come back to it, look for:
- a flat or weak battery, shown by slow cranking or warning lights flickering
- low or soft-looking tyres
- surface rust on the brake discs
- a grinding noise or pulling to one side that does not go away, which needs checking before you drive far
- leaks under the car where it has been parked
If the brakes feel wrong, do not drive it. Get it looked at first. Our guide to a car not driven for weeks covers what to check in more detail.
Keeping costs down
There is no magic trick, but a few habits make a real difference:
- Service on time. Skipping an oil change or a cambelt change can lead to much bigger bills. Intervals vary by car, so check your handbook or service book. Our guide on how often to change engine oil explains why it matters.
- Get warning lights checked early. Finding the cause of a fault is cheaper than repairing the damage it causes.
- Book the MOT early. Testing up to a month minus a day before expiry gives you time to fix anything without losing your renewal date.
- Get a price before work starts. Ask for the labour cost and what parts are needed, so there are no surprises.
How we can help
We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham, so we come to your student house or wherever the car is parked, as long as there is safe space and permission to work on it. That includes our mobile mechanic service across Canterbury and nearby areas.
We can do oil and filter changes, interim and full services, brake pads and discs, pre-MOT checks and warning light fault finding. If the problem is something outside those jobs, we can diagnose the cause and tell you what it needs.
Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job. We agree the price on WhatsApp before any work starts, and parts are extra. You will always know the cost first.
