Mobile Mechanic for Villages Near Dover

If you live in a village near Dover, a mobile mechanic can service and repair your car at home, so you avoid a trip into town and a wait at a garage. We are based in Aylesham and cover Eythorne, Shepherdswell, Elvington and Whitfield, as well as Nonington and Eastry. We can also come to your workplace in Dover.

Why mobile servicing helps between Dover and Aylesham

These villages sit between our base in Aylesham and Dover, so they are right in the middle of our area. For you, that means the mechanic comes to the car rather than the car going to the mechanic.

  • No time lost to garage trips. There is no drop-off in the morning and collection at the end of the day.
  • Home or work, your choice. We can work on your driveway, or at your workplace if you have permission to use the space.
  • Safer when the car has a fault. A car with failing brakes or a serious warning light should not be driven to a garage. We come to it instead.

We go into more detail on how this works for town drivers in our post on car servicing in Dover.

Winter on village lanes: what to know

This is the part that matters most for village drivers. Kent County Council says its primary salting routes cover about 30% of roads in Kent. These include all A and B roads, busy commuter routes and other roads that become hazardous in frost. KCC states that it does not treat minor roads and lanes.

So the lane outside your house may not be gritted, even when the main road is. KCC asks drivers to drive to the conditions and make sure their vehicle is winter ready.

The Highway Code adds some clear rules for icy and snowy weather:

  • You must clear snow and ice from all your windows before setting off (rule 229).
  • You must make sure your lights are clean and your number plates are visible and legible (rule 229).
  • Stopping distances can be ten times greater than on dry roads, so keep well back (rule 230).
  • On icy roads, drive slowly in as high a gear as possible, and accelerate and brake very gently (rule 231).

Good brakes and the right tyre pressures make a real difference on untreated lanes. Our guide to preparing your car for Kent’s winter roads covers this in full.

Dark lanes and your lights

If your lane has no street lights, this matters. The Highway Code (rule 113) says you must use headlights at night, except on roads with lit street lighting. Night means from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise.

That makes working lights more than a box to tick for the MOT. Walk round the car regularly and check every bulb. Keep lenses clean, as the Highway Code says lights, indicators, reflectors and number plates must be kept clean and clear.

Planning your MOT from a village

We are not an MOT test centre, so the test itself has to be done at a test station. GOV.UK says you can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current one runs out and keep the same renewal date. Test any earlier and your renewal date moves.

Use that month. A pre-MOT check at your home can pick up common faults before you drive to the test. Anything we find, such as worn brake pads, can then be sorted first, so the trip to the test centre is less likely to be wasted.

When to stop driving and call us

Some faults should never be driven on. The Highway Code says warning lights should go out once the engine starts, and if they stay on or come on while driving, you should stop and investigate. Stop driving and get it checked if you notice:

  • grinding brakes or a brake warning light
  • the oil pressure light coming on
  • the temperature gauge rising or steam from the engine
  • a flashing engine management light

For most of these, we can come out to the car and find the cause.

How we can help

We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham, and the villages around Dover are part of our regular area. Find out more about our mobile mechanic service in Dover.

We do servicing, oil and filter changes, brake pads and discs, timing belts, water pumps, pre-MOT checks and fault finding. Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job and how difficult it is. Parts are extra, and we agree the price with you on WhatsApp before any work starts.

For faults we do not repair ourselves, such as a flat battery or a suspension problem, we can come out, diagnose the cause and tell you what it needs.
