Diesel Mechanic in Canterbury: What a Diesel Service Needs
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
A good diesel mechanic in Canterbury will treat your diesel differently from a petrol car. Diesels with a particulate filter (DPF) usually need low SAPS oil, the fuel filter matters more, and short city trips can clog the DPF. Get those three things right and most diesels stay reliable.
Why diesels need their own servicing
A diesel shares the basics with a petrol car: oil, filters, brakes, fluids and checks. Our car service checklist covers what any service should include.
On top of that, a diesel has a fuel system built to very fine tolerances, and most modern ones have a DPF. These need a few extra things looked after. Service intervals and parts vary a lot between models, so always check your handbook or service book.
Oil: why low SAPS matters
SAPS stands for sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Low SAPS oils are often called low ash oils.
The RAC says diesels fitted with a DPF “usually require low-SAPS (low ash) engine oil”. It warns that the wrong specification can make the filter block early.
This is why “any oil of the right thickness” is not good enough on a diesel. The specification on the bottle needs to match your handbook, not just the viscosity.

The diesel fuel filter
On a diesel, the fuel filter does two jobs. It stops dirt reaching the injection pump and injectors, and it often includes a separator that splits water from the fuel.
Motrio, a car servicing network, says the separator should be drained periodically, especially in winter. If your car has a water-in-fuel warning light and it comes on, it says to get it drained as soon as possible to avoid damaging the pump.
Signs of a blocked fuel filter, according to Motrio, include:
- Loss of power, especially when accelerating or going uphill
- Hesitation or hard starting
- Stalling or higher fuel use
- Sometimes smoke or the engine warning light
Change intervals differ by car, so follow your service schedule. Our post on diesel fuel filter replacement goes into the job in more detail.
Short city trips and the DPF
A DPF captures soot from the exhaust. It has limited space, so the soot has to be burned off. This is called regeneration.
The RAC says short journeys at low speeds are “the prime cause of blocked diesel particulate filters”. So if your driving around Canterbury is mostly short hops across the city, school runs or quick trips to the shops, your DPF may struggle.
The RAC explains two ways the filter cleans itself:
- Passive regeneration happens on longer runs. The RAC suggests “a good 30 to 50 minute run at sustained speed on a motorway or A-road”.
- Active regeneration is when the engine’s computer adds extra fuel to heat the exhaust. If it is interrupted, the RAC suggests driving for around 10 minutes at over 40mph to let it finish.
If most of your driving is short, a regular longer run on a faster road can help. If your car only ever does a mile or two, it is worth asking whether a diesel suits that use.
DPF warning light: what to do
The RAC says amber DPF lights are advisory, but should not be ignored for long. A red light needs immediate attention. If the light stays on or other warnings appear, get the car checked promptly. Our guide to the DPF warning light explains what each stage means.
Do not be tempted to remove the filter. The RAC says removal is illegal and can bring fines of up to £1,000 for cars, and may invalidate your insurance. GOV.UK says an MOT tester will record a major fault if they find evidence the DPF has been tampered with.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use normal oil in my diesel?
If it has a DPF, the RAC says it usually needs low SAPS oil. Check the specification in your handbook.
How do I know if my diesel fuel filter is blocked?
Loss of power, hesitation, hard starting and stalling are common signs. Get it checked if you notice them.
Is my diesel suitable for short trips?
The RAC says short, low-speed journeys are the main cause of blocked DPFs. Regular longer runs help.
Will a removed DPF fail the MOT?
Yes. GOV.UK lists evidence of DPF tampering as a major fault.
