For brake repair in Canterbury, we come to your home or workplace and replace worn brake pads and discs on the spot, so you do not have to drive a car with doubtful brakes to a garage. Screeching, grinding, a brake wear light or a car that pulls to one side are the main signs. If you hear grinding, stop driving and get the brakes checked before you go anywhere.

Signs your brakes need attention

The RAC lists these warning signs:

  • A pad wear warning light on the dashboard. Not every car has wear sensors, so no light does not mean the pads are fine.
  • Loud screeching when you brake.
  • Grinding, which the RAC says likely means the pads have worn down completely.
  • Pulling to one side, which the RAC says likely means a brake fault.
  • Vibration through the pedal or steering, which may suggest warped discs.
  • Longer stopping distances.

We go through each of these in more detail in our post on brake pad warning signs.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Be cautious with brakes. Grinding likely means the pads are worn down completely, so stop driving and get the brakes checked. The RAC also advises checking the discs for damage whenever pads are changed.

The Highway Code says warning lights should go out once the engine starts, except the handbrake light. If one stays on or comes on while driving, stop and investigate, because there may be a serious fault.

A squeal on its own may just mean the pads need inspecting soon. Grinding, a soft pedal, a red brake warning light or the car pulling hard to one side are reasons to stop and get help. This is exactly the situation where a mobile mechanic makes sense.

Why brake jobs suit a mobile mechanic

Most pad and disc replacements need the car safely raised, the wheels off and the right tools. None of that needs a workshop, so it can be done on a driveway or in a suitable parking space.

The bigger benefit is safety. If your brakes are already grinding, the safest option is not to drive at all. We bring the parts and tools to the car instead.

It also saves time. You can stay at home or carry on working while the job is done.

How brakes are checked at the MOT

The DVSA MOT inspection manual sets out how brakes are judged:

  • Pads worn down to the wear indicator are a major defect, which means a fail.
  • Pads worn below 1.5mm are a dangerous defect.
  • Discs that are significantly and obviously worn are a major defect.
  • Discs that are insecure, fractured or otherwise likely to fail are dangerous.

The manual also says an illuminated brake wear indicator light is not, on its own, a reason for failure. The pads may still fail on thickness, though, so get them checked.

The RAC advises replacing pads when the friction material reaches 3mm, which is well before the MOT limit.

What affects the cost of brake repair

Costs vary a lot from car to car, so we agree a price on WhatsApp before we start. The main factors are:

  • Pads only, or pads and discs. The RAC notes discs usually outlast pads, but they do wear thin over time.
  • Front or rear axle. Pads are changed in axle pairs. The RAC says to change both fronts or both rears together, not just one side. Front pads usually wear faster.
  • Your car. Make, model and size change the parts needed.
  • Parts quality. Pad material affects price and life. The RAC notes organic pads are generally the cheapest but have a shorter life, while ceramic pads last longer.
  • Labour time. Our labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job. Parts are extra.

How you drive matters too. The RAC says hard braking, stop-start traffic, heavy loads and towing all wear brakes faster.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to change discs every time I change pads?
Not always. The RAC says discs generally outlast pads. We measure and inspect the discs and tell you if they need replacing.

Should I replace pads on just one wheel?
No. Pads are replaced in axle pairs, both fronts or both rears together.

My brake wear light is on. Will my car fail its MOT?
The light alone is not a reason for failure, according to the MOT inspection manual. Worn pads can still fail, so have them checked.

Can you fix my brakes if the car is parked on the street?
Often, yes, as long as there is a safe, level spot to work. Send us a photo of where the car is parked.
