Ford Fiesta Timing Belt Replacement Cost and Interval Guide
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
The Ford Fiesta timing belt replacement cost depends mostly on which engine your car has. Older petrol and diesel Fiestas have a conventional dry belt that is a fairly routine job, while the 1.0 EcoBoost and some newer engines use a “wet” belt that runs in oil and takes far longer to change. Some Fiestas have a timing chain instead, so the first step is finding out what is under your bonnet.
Which Fiestas have a timing belt?
The Fiesta has been sold with a lot of different engines, so there is no single answer. Here is what the sources we checked say:
- Older petrol Fiestas (1.25, 1.4 and 1.6): these have a conventional timing belt. Motoring site CompleteCar.ie gives an interval of eight years or 100,000 miles for these engines on a 2010 Fiesta.
- 1.4 and 1.6 TDCi diesels: also belt driven. The same source gives ten years or 125,000 miles.
- 1.0 EcoBoost, Mk7 Fiesta (2008-2017): uses a wet belt, according to Parkers. Parkers says Ford introduced wet belts on UK 1.0 EcoBoost engines in 2012 and moved to a timing chain in late 2018.
- Mk8 Fiesta (2017-2023) 1.0 EcoBoost: Parkers says these mostly have a chain, but the earliest cars may have a wet belt, so a VIN check is vital.
- Mk8 1.1 non-turbo petrol (2017 on): timing tool maker Tool Connection sells a dedicated kit for this engine and lists it as a wet belt engine.
If you are not sure, a Ford dealer can check your car’s VIN, which Parkers recommends. Your service book or handbook should also show the interval for your exact engine. Not sure about the difference? Our guide to timing belts vs timing chains explains it.
How often should a Fiesta timing belt be changed?
Always go by your handbook or service book first, because intervals vary by engine and year. That said, the 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt needs extra care.
Parkers reports that Ford’s official recommendation for EcoBoost engines was ten years or 150,000 miles, and calls this too long. Ford has already cut the interval on some 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engines to six years or 100,000 miles, down from ten years or 150,000 miles, as Fleet News reports. In the US, Ford Authority reported in August 2026 that Ford has updated its 1.0 EcoBoost interval to every six years or 100,000 miles.
Parts maker NTN-SNR adds that cars used infrequently or for short trips are more likely to have wet belt problems. If your Fiesta mostly does short local runs, or the history is unknown, it makes sense to have the belt looked at sooner rather than later.
There is more on why these belts wear in our wet timing belt guide.

Warning signs on a 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt
A wet belt slowly sheds particles into the engine oil. Parkers explains these can starve the engine of oil and, in extreme cases, the belt can snap. Signs Parkers lists include:
- the low oil pressure warning light coming on
- unusual rattling from the engine
- a rough idle
- starting problems
- rubber debris found in the oil filter at a service
If the oil pressure light comes on, stop driving as soon as it is safe. Carrying on can wreck the engine. Get it checked before the car is driven again.
What affects the Ford Fiesta timing belt replacement cost?
We don’t quote fixed prices for a job like this, because the right answer depends on the car. These are the main things that change the price.
The engine. This is the big one. ClickMechanic’s Fiesta price table lists most 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 engines at around 2-3 hours of labour, while some engines take far longer. Parkers says a wet belt change can take up to eight hours, as parts of the front end must come apart.
What else gets replaced. A belt job is rarely just a belt. For the 1.0 EcoBoost, NTN-SNR’s fitting guide calls for a new water pump, tensioner, oil pump belt, oil filter and auxiliary belts, plus a set of new gaskets and seals.
Special tools. Wet belt engines need specific locking and timing tools. NTN-SNR warns that incorrect timing can cause engine failure.
Parts brand. ClickMechanic notes that parts brand and model year also affect estimates.
Warranty. Parkers says Ford treats the timing belt as routine maintenance at the owner’s expense and will not replace a wet belt under warranty.

Look after the oil, too
On a wet belt engine, the oil is part of the timing system. Fleet News quotes advice to use only the exact type of oil the manufacturer recommends, and Parkers warns that skipped oil changes and low quality oil make problems worse. NTN-SNR lists Ford specification WSS-M2C948-B for several 1.0 EcoBoost engine codes. Check your handbook for the spec that matches your engine, and keep oil changes on time.

Frequently asked questions
Does my Ford Fiesta have a timing belt or chain?
It depends on the engine and year. Older 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 petrols and TDCi diesels have a belt. The Mk7 1.0 EcoBoost has a wet belt, and most Mk8 1.0 EcoBoosts have a chain. A VIN check confirms it.
What happens if a Fiesta timing belt snaps?
The engine stops, and serious engine damage is possible. On wet belt engines, oil starvation from belt debris can cause damage even before the belt breaks.
Can I keep driving with the oil pressure light on?
No. Stop as soon as it is safe and get it checked before driving again.
Do I need to change the belt if the mileage is low?
Intervals are given in years as well as miles, so an older low mileage car can still be due. Check your service book.
