Battery Warning Light On While Driving: What It Means
Written by Petro Olekhnovych, mobile mechanic in Aylesham, Kent
A battery warning light that comes on while you are driving usually means the battery is not being charged. The car is running on whatever charge is left in the battery, and when that runs out the car can lose power. The AA and RAC both advise against carrying on, so pull over safely and get it checked.
The light is a small battery-shaped symbol. Despite the name, the fault is often not the battery itself. It is more often something in the charging system that keeps the battery topped up.
What the battery warning light means
When the engine is running, a part called the alternator makes electricity. The RAC explains that it keeps the battery charged and also powers the car’s electrical systems. The engine drives it with a belt.
The battery warning light is really a charging warning light. The RAC says it “may indicate the battery is not charging or a fault is present”. The AA puts it simply: a red battery light while driving means “the battery isn’t charging”.
It is normal for the light to come on for a moment when you turn the key, then go out once the engine starts. The RAC notes that warning lights often light up briefly like this. A light that stays on, or comes on while driving, is the problem.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Not really. The RAC says “You should not drive if the battery warning light is on”, because you could break down from a sudden power failure. The AA says the fault needs looking at immediately.
Once the alternator stops charging, everything electrical draws from the battery alone. The RAC warns that when an alternator fails completely, “the car will soon shut down altogether”. That could happen on a fast road, in the dark or in traffic.
The AA’s advice is to stop somewhere safe, turn the engine off and report the breakdown. It also says not to restart the engine, as this could make the problem worse.

Common causes
The AA and RAC point to a short list of likely causes:
- A faulty alternator. Wear, damage and exposure to the weather can all cause problems, according to the RAC.
- The alternator drive belt. The AA lists a problem with the belt that turns the alternator as a possible cause.
- Wiring or connections. The RAC mentions bad electrical connections and damaged or frayed cabling.
- A flat battery. The AA lists this as a possible cause too.
You cannot tell which one it is just from the light. A proper check of the battery, belt, wiring and charging output is the only way to know.
Other signs that point to the charging system
The RAC lists other signs of a failing alternator that often come with the warning light:
- Headlights or interior lights that look dim or flicker
- Electric windows, air con or the radio not working properly
- The battery going flat often, or the car being hard to start
- A grinding noise at speed, followed by a smell of burning rubber
- The engine stalling unexpectedly
If you notice any of these, with or without the light, get the car checked soon. If the car will not start at all, our guide to why a car won’t start explains the difference between battery, starter and alternator problems.
What to do when the light comes on
- Find a safe place to stop and turn the engine off.
- Do not keep restarting the engine. The AA says this could make things worse.
- Call your breakdown provider or a mechanic to find the cause.
If the battery has already gone flat, the RAC says you can try a jump start or call for recovery. A jump start only gets the engine going, though. If the charging fault is still there, the battery will run down again.
How we can help
We are a mobile mechanic based in Aylesham, and we come to you. We cover Canterbury, Dover, Deal, Sandwich, Folkestone and many villages in between. See our areas we cover page for the full list.
If your battery light is on, we can come out and diagnose the cause, then tell you what it needs. That means checking the battery, the drive belt, the wiring and whether the car is charging, so you know exactly what you are dealing with before you spend anything.
Labour is £30-£50 per hour depending on the job and its difficulty, and parts are extra. We agree the price with you on WhatsApp before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions
Does the battery warning light mean I need a new battery?
Not necessarily. The light usually means the battery is not charging. That is often caused by the alternator, its drive belt or the wiring, not the battery itself.
How far can I drive with the battery light on?
There is no safe distance. It depends on how much charge is left and what is switched on. The AA and RAC both advise against driving on.
Can I jump start the car and carry on?
A jump start can get the engine running, but it will not fix a charging fault. The battery is likely to go flat again.
Why did the light come on and then go off again?
A light that comes on briefly when you start the car is normal. If it flickers on and off while driving, get the charging system checked.
